CARMEL, Ind., July 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Conseco, Inc. (NYSE: CNO) today reported additional steps in its previously announced program to consolidate operations and reduce operating expenses:
-- Conseco plans to consolidate all Chicago operations of its Bankers Life and Casualty Company subsidiary. In early 2008, the company plans to vacate the space currently occupied by part of Bankers' operation in Chicago's Merchandise Mart and move those departments to 600 West Chicago Ave., where most of Bankers' operations are already located. -- Conseco plans to sell one of its six office buildings in Carmel, Ind., and by early 2008 relocate the departments currently housed there into vacant space in its remaining buildings. Carmel is home to Conseco's corporate offices, Conseco Insurance Group, 40|86 Advisors, Inc. and certain enterprise-wide support functions. -- Conseco plans to sell a Des Moines, Iowa office building property that was formerly used by one of its subsidiaries.
Conseco CEO C. James Prieur said, "These steps will improve our operating efficiency, free up capital, and reduce our annual real estate and other expenses by about $6 million. We expect to record pre-tax losses of approximately $20 million, representing estimated lease termination costs, one-time relocation costs and other expenses related to the consolidation. We expect to record most of these costs in the remainder of 2007 and first quarter of 2008."
