Carmel, Ind., December 5, 2003 -- Conseco, Inc. (NYSE:CNO) today announced that it has filed a universal shelf registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the "SEC") on Form S-3 to register the offer and sale from time to time of up to an aggregate of $3 billion of various types of securities. The registration statement is being filed to enable the company to offer the securities in the future in the event that market conditions warrant.

The registration statement on Form S-3 has not been declared effective by the SEC.
