CHICAGO (November 7, 2003) - Edward M. Berube, President and CEO ofBankers Life and Casualty Company, Chicago, has been named to the national Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Association.
The Alzheimer's Association is the nation's largest voluntary health organization exclusively dedicated to funding and promoting Alzheimer's research and to assisting and supporting Alzheimer's patients, families and caregivers. The association is the leading private funder of research into the causes, treatments, and prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
"We are delighted to have someone of Ed's stature join our Board," said Sheldon Goldberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alzheimer's Association. "His perspective as a business executive, especially one who leads a company that focuses on the health and retirement needs of seniors, will be of great value to our organization."
"Ed has led the charge at his own company, educating and involving his employees in the fight against Alzheimer's. Bankers has been the premier corporate sponsor of the Rita Hayworth Gala in Chicago for the last several years, and is a major sponsor of other Alzheimer's fundraising events throughout the country. I look forward to welcoming Ed to our board," said Goldberg.
Berube said, "No disease is feared more by seniors than Alzheimer's. In our business, we witness the emotional and financial pain Alzheimer's causes our policyholders and their families every single day. For the last several years Bankers employees and agents have been actively involved in Alzheimer's Association fundraising through our sponsorship of Forget Me Not Days and our participation in the Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk. I look forward to the opportunity to help this organization do all that will be required to win the battle against this terrible disease."
Berube joined Bankers as its top executive in October 2000. Before joining the company, he served as president and chief operating officer of American Life Insurance Company, an AIG subsidiary, and prior to that president of CIGNA Financial Advisors.
