Carmel, Ind.: April 15, 2005 — Conseco, Inc. announced that David J. Barra has been promoted to chief financial officer for Conseco Insurance, the Carmel-based Conseco insurance companies. As CFO, he oversees the accounting operations and financial reporting duties for Conseco Insurance.

Since joining Conseco in 1990, Barra has served in management positions in the company’s finance department and as chief financial officer of Conseco Retirement Services. Recently Barra managed the internal audit team that orchestrated Conseco’s successful compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley. Before joining Conseco, Barra worked with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) for 11 years, ultimately serving as senior audit manager.

Barra reports to Gene Bullis, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Conseco, Inc. “Dave’s promotion reflects his financial expertise and significant contributions to Conseco,” said Bullis. “We expect that Dave will continue to play a key role in our future success.”

Barra holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. He is a Certified Public Accountant, a Chartered Life Underwriter, and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Indiana Society of Certified Public Accountants.
